Houston City Council - District C

Meet Kendra

Kendra Yarbrough Camarena is a lifelong resident of Houston.

After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin, Kendra came home and began teaching at her alma mater, Scarborough High School and Clifton Middle School. Kendra and her husband Carlos, who is a businessman, are the proud parents of a 10-year-old daughter, Bobbie Isabella (Bella), and a 13-year-old son, Carlos (CJ).

As her career in education grew, she became an Instructional Coach working to ensure there was a highly effective teacher in social studies classrooms around the Houston Independent School District and received a Masters of Arts from the University of Houston.  Each day she worked with teachers and administrators to address issues that arose throughout the school year.

Kendra volunteered her time when not in school to her community, children's school, and local organizations including the Forest West Community Association, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Delta Kappa Gamma International Sorority for Key Women Educators and many others.

This past year, Kendra went back to the classroom to teach the curriculums she wrote for Government and Make Your Impact- Youth Civic Connections.  The idea for the Make Your Impact curriculum was not Kendra's but her son, Carlos (CJ). He joined his mom many times as she volunteered her time to address community issues and plan community events.  He felt that kids in his age group should have the opportunity to make a change in their communities. Kendra listened and recognized an opportunity to build youth community leaders who impacted change.  This idea and her experience in designing curriculum led her to develop a nonprofit that focused on engaging our youth in community activism. Today, she has implemented that program at Wheatley High School and executed her students' community service projects this Spring.

As a community activist, Kendra believes in giving back to her community. As your City Councilmember, Kendra will be committed to an attention to detail approach of problem-solving for the city and its constitutes

Kendra is a uniquely qualified candidate who will use her experience in the classroom, her understanding of city government, and her sense of the community she has always called home to serve the people of District C. She understands what our District needs and how to get things done. Whatever the issue that everyday Houstonians face - infrastructure, flooding, safety, transportation or taxes - Kendra will be a Councilmember we can trust to work for all of us.
